Most businesses use their home pages as a marketing or communication tool for generating and retaining business. As such, corporate sites may provide annual reports, news articles, business ventures, and information about products and services. You should spend a good portion of your research time reviewing the information available at your company's home page.

Earlier in the course, we visited a number of useful sites for locating company home pages including Hoover's Online. In this section, we will present several additional resources for finding company websites.

First, if you haven't yet located the home page for your company, try guessing the address. Many businesses have a website address that looks like this:

http://www.companyname.com

If you are looking for a company such as Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com), McDonalds (http://www.mcdonalds.com), or Disney (http://www.disney.com), try typing the address as described above in your browser's address box.

If that doesn't lead to immediate results, Whois.net allows you to search a database of registered domain names.

Google is a search engine that is effective for locating company home pages.

Dogpile is a meta-search engine that will search the major search engines and give you the top results from each. This will allow you to quickly determine if any of the search engines have indexed a home page for the company.
