PRACTICE

Most probate records are cataloged at the county level. However, for a few states, these records are cataloged at the state level. If you do not find probate records at the county level, search at the state level.

  1. Click Catalog in the menu above the search boxes.

  2. Select Place-names in the Search drop-down menu.

  3. Type the name of county followed by a comma and the name of the state in the search box
(e.g., Perry, Ohio).  NOTE:  Do not type the word "County."  Be sure to spell out the state name.  Do not abbreviate.

  4. Select the correct location from the drop-down list.

NOTE: The State is always listed first, the County second, and the Town/Township third.

  5. Click the Search button.

  6. Review the categories of available records for the county. Click on ONE of the following: Vital Records, Probate Records (for wills), Land and Property (for deeds), or Church Records.

  7. Review the results.

  8. Click any records of interest.

  9. Review the notes about the film.

  10. Write down the microfilm number or print the page.

  11. Visit your local Family History Center and order the microfilms.
