Connecticut Non-Military Service
1774 - 1784

In addition to military service, the DAR also accepts civil and patriotic service for establishing an ancestor as a Revolutionary War patriot.  Thousands of men in Connecticut served in some type of civil or patriotic capacity during the American Revolution.  The DAR Genealogical Records Committee (GRC) reports document non-military service for individuals residing in 60 Connecticut towns from 1774-1784.  This page provides instructions on how to identify whether your Connecticut ancestor is listed in these reports as having served in a civil or patriotic capacity.  Please note that the service must have occurred between 19 April 1775 and 26 November 1783 to be accepted by the DAR.

Instructions

The first step is to identify the name of the Connecticut town(s) where your ancestor resided from 1774 to 1784.

Next, click here to look up the GRC series, volume, and page numbers associated with your ancestor's town.  For example, the town of Branford is listed as s1 v153 pages 12-16, and the town of Hebron is listed as s1 v157 pages 1-14

After identifying the GRC series, volume, and page numbers for your ancestor's town, the next step is to search the DAR GRC Index.

The instructions for searching the DAR GRC Index are below.  Click here to search the DAR GRC Index.

  1. Click the drop down arrow next to All States and Countries and select Connecticut.

  2. Type the surname (last name) of your ancestor in the Surname box.
  3. Type the first name of your ancestor in the First Name box.

  4. Type  s1  in the Series box.

  5. Type the volume number (i.e.,  v153  OR  v157 ) in the Volume box.

  6. Click the Search button.

  7. Review your results.  If you searched on v153, SUBTRACT five (5) pages from the page number listed in the DAR GRC Index for the correct page number. (For example, Travis Ayer is listed on page 160 in the DAR GRC Index, but the correct page number is 155.) NOTE: Page numbers for v157 are correct in the DAR GRC Index.

  8. Verify that the CORRECT page number for your ancestor is the same as the page numbers listed for his town of residence. (Travis Ayer resided in Saybrook, and page 155 corresponds with the records for the town of Saybrook.)  NOTE:  The civil or patriotic service must have occurred between 19 April 1775 and 26 November 1783 to be accepted by the DAR.

If you locate one or more GRC reports of interest, you may order up to 10 pages of records from the DAR Library. The fee for DAR members is $10.00.  For nonmembers, the fee is $15.00.  Click here for the form for ordering a GRC report.  Be sure to provide the entire citation for the record/records of interest. This would include the name in the index, the state (Connecticut), series number (s1), volume number and pages of interest.  For more information on ordering records, click here and scroll to "Photocopy Service" near the bottom of the page.
